Rob Vis

At a young age, Rob Vis (b. 1975) became fascinated by color and form. This expressed itself in the 1980s, his early childhood, in which he engaged and participated in the, still current and vibrant, graffiti art in his birth and hometown of Dordrecht.

Street art (street graphics), which emerged in the 1970s, actively introduced Rob to murals at a young age. The 'tags' and 'pieces', spray can and markers, they shaped his sense of tessellation and composition. Not without merit, it brought him to the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam where he graduated cum laude as an autonomous artist (fine arts) in 2001.

Although comparisons are obvious, Rob sees the murals he still makes today on commission and in collaboration as another part of his artistry and separate from his current autonomous work shown in this exhibition.

Abstract art, a movement born at the beginning of the last century, Rob Vis applies it anno now. Whereas the pioneers of this movement showed underlying geometric principles, Rob reads the present and isolates images from everyday life, capturing them in a frame. He deploys his eye and attention to material and texture by “upscaling,” among other things, incorporating found objects and painting with montage. As artlessly as possible, in the plain language of high-gloss paint and spray can.

He zooms in on micro and macro levels on the bulk of material, form and color in the industrial area where his current studio is located, the border area between city and country. The images he absorbs and adapts there are not so much observations as accidental sensations in an environment where the postmodern individualized man does not seem present, but where work is done in shifts. An environment of pragmatic production, processing and logistics, but for those who observe from enchantment and wonder it can become a museum of unintended art. He translates the showcase of extramuseal images that spontaneously cross his path there, during walks or bike rides, into industrial assemblies.
